WHAT I BUILD

You don't need all five of these.
You need the one that's blocking everything else.

I don't have a list of services. I have a list of problems, and what fixes each one. Which one you need depends on what's actually in the way, and that's the part I work out first.

CHAPTER 01

THE WORK

Five problems.
Five different jobs.
Only one is yours right now.

Below is what I'd actually do in each case, and what I wouldn't.

If people don't understand what you offer

Foundation

We go through what you sell, who buys it, and why they pick you instead of the next option. Often the answer isn't written down anywhere. It's in your head, and it comes out slightly differently every time you say it.

Then I write it down. One sentence you can use everywhere — your website, your profiles, your reply when someone asks what you do.

What this is not

A rebrand. No new logo, no new colours. Those cost money and change nothing while the sentence underneath is still unclear.

If nobody can find you

Being found

I build or fix your website so it loads fast, works properly on a phone, and actually says something.

Then the search side. What people type when they want what you sell, whether your site answers those words, and what someone finds when they search your business name.

What this is not

A promise about rankings. A new site doesn't rank because its code is tidy. What moves it is time, content and other sites linking to you. I'll tell you roughly how long that takes before you spend anything on it.

If people find you but don't get in touch

Turning interest into action

I go through your site the way a stranger would, asking one question: is there any reason not to get in touch, and is there an easy way to do it?

Usually there's a phone number missing, a form asking for more than it needs, or a page that explains what you do without ever saying what happens next.

Then the part after the form. Where an enquiry goes, who sees it, how quickly someone replies. Most businesses have never actually decided this, so it happens differently every time.

What this is not

More traffic. If a thousand people visit and three get in touch, sending two thousand doesn't fix anything.

If you can't keep up with the work

Delivery

We map what happens from the moment an enquiry arrives to the moment the work is done. Written down, in order, so you can see where it stops.

Usually a few steps only exist in your head. Those are the ones that get dropped when you're busy.

Then we fix the worst one first. A simple way to track enquiries, a checklist, a reply you don't have to write from scratch each time. Small things, in order.

What this is not

A software project. Most of what slows a small business down is a decision nobody made, not a tool nobody bought.

If nothing's improving month to month

Getting better over time

I set up tracking that answers one question: where did this customer come from?

Most businesses have analytics installed and nobody has ever opened it. That isn't measurement.

Then we agree what to look at, how often, and what we'd change based on it. Numbers you never act on are just numbers.

What this is not

A monthly report full of charts. If you can't make a decision from it, it isn't worth sending.

CHAPTER 02

WHAT I DON'T DO

I'd rather say no than do it badly.

There's a long list of things I don't build. Here are the ones people ask for most.

  • Mobile apps. If you need an app, you need someone who builds apps all day. I'd be learning on your money.
  • Print, packaging and signage. Different craft, different suppliers, different problems.
  • Photo and video shoots. I can work with what you already have. If you need a real shoot with a crew, that's someone else's job.
  • Logos and full brand identity. I can show you options and tell you what I think of them. Designing an identity properly is its own profession, and it isn't mine.

And the one that matters more than the list: if what you're asking for won't fix what's actually in the way, I'll say so. Even when it's something I could happily charge you for.

If you need something on that list, tell me anyway. I'll usually know someone worth pointing you at, and I'd rather do that than take work I'd do badly.

CHAPTER 03

HOW THIS WORKS

Some of it has an end. Some of it doesn't.

A website is a project. It starts, it finishes, you own it. Same with sorting out what happens after an enquiry, or setting up tracking properly. There's a clear end, and after it you don't need me for that thing again.

Other work has no end. Being found, and getting better month to month, only work if someone keeps at them. Those are ongoing or they don't work at all.

Which one you need depends on what's in the way, so I'll tell you which it is before you commit to anything. I'd rather do one project properly than put you on something monthly that neither of us can justify by month four.

I work with a small number of businesses at a time. That's deliberate.

CHAPTER 04

NEXT STEP

You don't have to know what you need.

Most people arrive with a fair idea — a new website, better ads, more enquiries. Sometimes that's right. Sometimes the thing they came for isn't the thing that's in the way.

Either way, you'll hear what I actually think before you spend anything.

I reply within one working day.
